About Baseball Calgary

We are a high performance league with traveling youth teams that compete in the Baseball Alberta province wide league, and tournaments throughout Western Canada and US. We play an all-star type format all season long, starting practicing in the winter and playing through to August.  We attract high performance players from throughout Calgary and area who are hoping to take their game to the next level.  Most of our graduating Midget players end up attending baseball colleges in Canada & U.S.

Congratulations to 2 Baseball Calgary players selected in MLB Draft!

Baseball Calgary would like to congratulate alumni Dale Anderson and Jordan Wong, for being selected in the 2009 MLB Baseball draft.  Anderson, a Catcher currently attending the College of Southern Idaho,  was a member of our 2004 Bantam Cubs that won a National Canadian Championship as well as being on our Midget team from 2005 to 2007 which won Alberta provincial and Western Canadian championships.  He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 45th round.  Wong, a right-handed pitcher who was a key member of last year’s Midget team and is at the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball was selected in the 46th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Season Starts May 1st

Baseball Alberta provincial play for our association’s teams is starting.   Schedules for our performance and competitive teams have now been posted.  You are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Cubs at our home games at Inland.

Successful Silent Auction

Baseball Calgary’s first Silent Auction was a successful event, as through the generous donations of dozens of items and the willingness of participants to keep outbidding their friends, almost $4000 was raised for our teams.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this a fun and lucrative event.

Baseball Calgary thanks its members for successful Casino
Baseball Calgary would like to thank all its members who volunteered to fill casino shifts in January.  This is our biggest fundraiser and the income generated from this would not be possible withouth everyone's help.

Upcoming Umpiring Clinics

Level 1 & 2 Umpiring Clinics are coming up in time for the start of the season.  Cost is only $65 for Level I ($75 for late registrations).

Call for items for Silent Auction on April 18th
Baseball Calgary will be holding its first annual Silent Auction Dinner & Fundraiser on April 18th.  This will be a chance for teams to raise money for the upcoming season and a great opportunity for businesses to promote themselves to a targetted audience.  Anyone who would like to contribute items, please contact Ruben at fundraising@baseballcalgary.com.  All teams are encouraged to solicit as many items for the event as possible.

Bill Buckner announced as guest for annual U of C Dino Dinner

The UC Dinos Baseball Club has made it official... on Thursday, January 29th, Bill Buckner will be our guest speaker for the evening. The event, which will take place at the Red and White Club, will also offer a silent auction and raffle prizes. The evening will definitely be one you won't want to miss.   As interest for tickets has already begun, the Dinos Baseball Club is allowing you to reserve your seats earlier then usual. There would be no better stocking stuffer at Christmas for that avid baseball fan!!! 

Assistant Coaching Applications Now Being Accepted for 2009 Season

We are looking for assistant coaches who are interested in coaching in our program of high-performance baseball.  We are accepting applications at all age levels from Mosquito (10-11) to Midget (16-18).   If you are interested, please call Miki Kawahara, VP Technical Director at (403) 540-8797 to find out how to submit your resume.

Former MLB Draftee, Jim Lawson named Coach of Mosquito team

Baseball Calgary is very excited to have Jim Lawson return to its coaching ranks.   Jim brings his many years of experience, both as a top player and coach to lead Mosquito program for the second year.  For more information on Mr. Lawson, please look here.   UPDATE:  Regretablly, due to a lack of interested players at this age level,  Baseball Calgary is NOT running a Mosquito program for the 2009 season.

 

Steve Sullivan named Coach of Bantam team

Baseball Calgary is also pleased to announce that Stephen Sullivan has been selected as head coach of the Bantam team.  Steve has coached youth players of all ages and abilities, having coached with the Cubs for the last 4 seasons, while currently also an assistant coach with the University of Calgary Dinos and has coached with Team Alberta at the Canada Cup, Western Canada Summer Games, and the Prospect Series.  His teams have won Provincial and Western Canadian championships. 

 

Miki Kawahara returns as Coach of Midget team

Miki returns to Baseball Calgary for his second season, after previously coaching in the BC Junior Premier League including back-to-back Regional Championships. An academic All-Canadian at Douglas College and UBC, after graduating with a degree in Human Kinetics, he became the Manager of Baseball Conditioning at Twist Conditioning.  There he was a Senior Strength Coach for hundreds of individuals competing as elite amateurs, Olympians and professional athletes.  Miki is also the founder and head instructor for Diamondawgs Baseball, a Central Alberta company specializing in baseball education.  In addition, he is still heavily involved with high performance athlete conditioning and has presented to athletes and coaches in Canada and the US.

 

Chris Ouellette returns as Coach of PeeWee team

A former teacher and High School Principal, Chris has coached for over 30 years, and last baseball season coached the Baseball Calgary PeeWee Cubs to an undefeated (5-0) 2008 Provincial Championship.  He was a pitcher and shortstop with the Calgary Jimmies of the Alberta Major Baseball League which won a Provincial, and later, a Canadian Baseball Championship.

2008 AGM Date announced
Baseball Calgary will be holding their 2008 Annual General Meeting on Thursday, October 16th.   The meeting will start at
7 PM at the WRD Logistics Warehouse at 3737 64th Ave. SE.  This is your chance to elect the 2009 Board Members and see what exciting new plans are in store for next season.  Please make every effort to attend and encourage your friends who may be interested in finding out what Baseball Calgary is all about to join us as well.  Refreshments will be served and every attendee will have their name entered into a draw for free registration for the 2008 Winter Baseball Camp.  The draw is open both to members and any guests who attend.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Baseball Calgary players help Zone team to Alberta Summer Games Gold Medal!

Congratulations to the Zone 3 baseball team representing Calgary which won the 2008 Alberta Summer GamesMartin Brickland and Logan Bailey of the Baseball Calgary Bantam team helped the team go 5-0 to take home the Gold Medal.

PeeWee Cubs win Provincial Championship!

The PeeWee Calgary Cubs won their Tier’s Alberta Provincial Championship in a convincing manner.  The team went undefeated in the round-robin series of games as their offense was unstoppable, getting mercy victories in 2 of the 4 games, and their pitching was just as good, culminating in a combined no-hitter in the gold medal game.  The highlight of the weekend was a come-from-behind walk-off win over the top ranked South Jasper Place Jays who led 14-7 heading into the bottom of the 7th, before the Cubs bats exploded for 8 runs including 3 after there were 2 outs.

Fencing completed at Inland diamonds

The fences at the 2 diamonds at Inland Athletic Park where Baseball Calgary's Midget and Bantam teams are hosting games this season have been completed.  The picture below shows a clear view of the West diamond with a portion of the batting cages visible in the lower left corner.

Former Calgary Cub, Aaron Dunsmore signs for NCAA Division I team

Congratulations to Aaron Dunsmore who has signed to play with the University of Dayton, Ohio for the 2008/2009 season.  Aaron received an academic and baseball scholarship from the U of Dayton Flyers.  This summer he will be playing in the Western Major Baseball League for the Sherwood Park Dukes.  For information on where other Baseball Calgary alumni are now playing, please check our alumni page.

BLE/PBF delivers successful SuperClinic in Calgary

The BLE/PBF SuperClinic for coaches and players held on the weekend of April 5th and 6th had a great turnout with several coaches and players from Baseball Calgary participating.

Dale Anderson of Midget team signs NCAA Division I Letter of Intent
Congratulations to Dale Anderson who has signed a Letter of Intent with the University of Buffalo.   Dale was offered an athletic and academic scholarship and will play with the Buffalo Bulls of NCAA Division I in the fall of 2008.  Congratulations to Dale who is the latest of several Baseball Calgary players to go on to play US College Ball.  Read Calgary Herald Neighbours article, or click here to see scan.


Baseball Calgary Upgrades Facility at Inland Athletic Park

A batting cage has now been added to our diamonds at Inland Athletic Park.  Dugouts and fences will be put up to have the diamonds game-ready for the  start of the 2008 season.  We have future plans to put in an all grass infield and eventually add lights and an electronic scoreboard.  For updates on the progress of work being done at our facility and to see detailed plans for development of these diamonds, please check our facilities page .

Baseball Calgary Amateur Association is a member of Baseball Alberta.  Our teams are all traveling teams that compete in the Baseball Alberta province wide league, & tournaments, throughout Western Canada & US.  Baseball Calgary fields teams at the following levels:  Mosquito (11 and younger), Pee Wee (12 and 13 year olds), Bantam (14 and 15), Midget (16-18), Junior (19-21)  & Senior (21 and over).  We attract high performance players from throughout Calgary & area for our teams, who are hoping to take their game to the next level.  Many of our 18 year old Midget players from last year are currently attending baseball colleges in Canada & US.  Check our Alumni News”  page for details.  Baseball Alberta is a member of Baseball Canada and is the feeder system for Team Canada.
